There’s nothing like a little teatime break in the middle of shopping to recharge your batteries in true British style. The buffet of 100 pastries baked by Laurent Ouros, head pastry-cook at the Grands Buffets, go just right with tea, coffee or chocolate drinks.

In addition to its myriad restaurant services, the Grands Buffets has added the afternoon tea rooms, which are not all that common in Narbonne.

As usual, the management has not done things by halves.

Lists of coffees, teas, chocolate drinks, fruit juices with something for everyone. This is also a good opportunity to enjoy traditional pastries that have long since deserted the tables. The comeback of the great classics will delight those who despaired of ever being able to enjoy their favourites again – Millefeuilles, Paris-Brest, Rum Baba, Black Forest Gateau, Saint-Honoré, Eclairs, Macaroons and other icons of fine baking.

Alongside the great traditional pastries, there are many new ones in different styles: regional desserts (Bordeaux canneles, Ardèche tarts, pancakes, etc.) rub shoulders with exotic ones (mantecados from Andalusia and gazelle horns from Morocco…).

So you get the message, a little time out with friends or family in the afternoon is bound to catch on. The British, who know all about teatime, have a way of inciting each other to make the most of it around 4 or 5 in the afternoon and “take a break in the rush”.
